A single currency is a situation where countries agree to use the same currency. The main example of a single currency is the adoption of the Euro as the single currency for 11 European countries in 1999. Euro notes and coins were issued in January 2002 replacing the existing (so-called legacy) currencies in the 11 Eurozone countries.
