Stockpiling is the process of building up a stock of goods. This may be involuntary which may be caused by overproduction or a slowdown in demand or it may be a matter of policy in preparation for seasonal peaks in demand. However, stockpiling has a cost as the firm will have a large amount of working capital tied up in the stocks and it will be difficult to realise quickly should the firm need to.
