Alphabetics is the study of letter-sound correspondences and spellings and the application of this knowledge to reading and writing. It is the basic principle underlying English writing - the way the written language represents the spoken language. In the alphabetic principle written words are composed of letters (graphemes). The letters correspond to segments of spoken words or sounds (phonemes).
