Definition of slate

An identification board placed in frame at the beginning of a shot. A number that identifies a particular shot. Every repeat or retake of a slate is called a take. For example, a shot is identified by a slate number, and each repeat of this shot would require a new take number. Slates run sequentially throughout a production, while takes begin at 1 for each new slate.
