Admiral Zheng He
Admiral Zheng He, [also Cheng Ho; pronounced "Jung Huh"] (1371-1435) China’s most legendary navigator made seven voyages between 1405 and 1433. With his trading fleets, he traveled at least as far as East Africa in ships that were as large as 400 feet long. (Columbus's s ships were a small fraction of this size). For more information on the Chinese maritime achievement of the fifteenth century, see Louise Levathes' When China Ruled the Seas: The Treasure Fleet of the Dragon Throne 1405-1433 (New York: Oxford University Press, 1996). By the 1440s, the Chinese emperor had decided against pursuing maritime enterprises. The ships were destroyed, along with many of the records that documented China's place in the Age of Exploration and Discovery.
