Background
- Albert Chinụalụmọgụ Achebe was born on November 16, 1930, in Ogidi, Nigeria.
- Father and mother, Isaiah Okafo Achebe and Janet Anaenechi Iloegbunam Achebe were converts to the Protestant Church Mission Society (CMS) in Nigeria.
- Moved away from family at the age of twelve, to the village of Nekede.
- Had five siblings
Education
- 1936 - St. Phillip’s Central School, where his older brother John taught
- 1944 - Was accepted at both the prestigious Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha and the even more prestigious Government College in Umuahia.
- He was double-promoted in his first year, completing the first two years' studies in one, and spending only four years in secondary school, instead of the standard five.
- 1948 – He was admitted to the University College of Ibadan as a Major Scholar in the first intake and given a bursary to study medicine.
- 1950 - Wrote a piece for the University Herald entitled "Polar Undergraduate", his debut as an author.
- Wrote his first short story while attending the University.
- 1953 - Achebe was awarded a second-class degree.
Careers
- Taught English at the Merchants of Light school in Oba.
- 1954- to work for the Nigerian Broadcasting Service (NBS), he left the school and moved to Lagos
- 1956 - Achebe was selected for training in London at the Staff School run by the British Broadcasting Corporation.
- June 17, 1958 – Things Fall Apart was published.
- 1967- co-founded a publishing company with Nigeria poet Christopher Okigbo
- 1971 – Became editor of Okike, a prestigious literary magazine.
- 1985 – He was made Emeritus Professor at the University of Nigeria.
- 1987- Received the Nigerian National Merit Award
- Novelist, professor, poet, and critic
Family/ Retirement
- 1961 – married Christie Okoli
- Has 4 children
- 1982 - Retired from the University of Nigeria.
- 1990 – Was in a severe car accident which left him paralyzed from the waist down.
- Currently lives in the United States, and has a teaching position at Bard College.
Writing Style
- Fiction.
- Draws heavily on the oral tradition of Igbo people.
- Weaves folktales into the stories.

Biography of Chinua Achebe
Albert Chinualumogu Achebe was born on 16, 1930 in Ogidi, Nigeria. His parents were Isaiah Okafo, a Christian churchman, and Janet N. Achebe. He married Christie Chinwe Okoli, September 10, 1961. He has four children: Chinelo, Ikechukwu, Chidi, and Nwando. He was very smart, and he attended a government college in Umuahia in 1944 until 1947 where he then went to University College in Ibadan. He then obtained a B.A. from London University in 1953. He learned broadcasting at the British Broadcasting Corporation in London in 1956. Chinua is part of an explosion of great writers from Nigeria and the surrounding are. He is currently considered one of the best novelists writing in the English language. Achebe rejects the European idea "that art should be accountable to no one, and [needs] to justify itself to nobody,” Instead he believes that "art is, and always was, at the service of man. Our ancestors created their myths and told their stories for a human purpose." He believes that any good novel should have purpose.
