Giovanni Verrazzano
Giovanni Verrazzano (1485-1528) Florentine explorer who sailed under the French flag, and who is credited with discovering present-day New York, Block Island, and the Narragansett Bay. In 1523, Francis I of France commissioned Verrazzano to discover a westward passage to Asia. Verrazzano set sail in 1524, reaching what is now Cape Fear in North Carolina in March. Only in 1609 would another European, Henry Hudson, explore present-day New York. Verrazzano is memorialized by New York’s Verrazzano Narrows Bridge.
