Hernando De Soto
Hernando De Soto (1500-1542) Spanish explorer credited with discovering the Mississippi River. De Soto helped Pizarro capture Atahualpa, and aided in the conquest of Cuzco, the capital of the Incan empire in South America. Charles I (Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire) appointed De Soto governor of Cuba, and gave him patents to explore what is now the southeastern portion of the United States. Landing at present-day Tampa Bay in 1539, De Soto and his men wintered in northern Florida, and explored the Carolinas. They crossed the Great Smokey Mountains, explored parts of Georgia and Alabama, and eventually Mississippi, Arkansas and other areas around the Mississippi River. De Soto died of a fever on the banks of the Mississippi in 1542. His men made their way to New Spain (Mexico), arriving the following year.
