Jacques Cartier
Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) French explorer and mariner who discovered the St. Lawrence River. Cartier was chosen by Francis I to search for a northwest passage to China. Cartier’s first voyage in 1534 took him to present-day Newfoundland, and around the entire Gulf of St. Lawrence. Cartier also sighted Prince Edward Island and the mainland territory of New Brunswick, and sailed into Chaleur Bay, which he named. He landed on the Gaspe Peninsula, and crossed the St. Lawrence River estuary. Much of France’s claims to Canada were based on Cartier’s voyages. On a second voyage, Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence to present-day Quebec and elsewhere. On a third voyage in 1541, Cartier attempted to establish a colony, but was unsuccessful.
