Carrying Capacity |
The number of people that an environment can support before it is permanently damaged. |
Conservation |
Protecting habitats from human activities such as poaching, deforestation, or new developments that threaten the natural environment. |
Coral reefs |
Corals are tiny marine animals. They often have a hard outer skeleton of limestone. They live together in large colonies which are mounded up into a reef. Coral reefs develop in warm, shallow seas. |
Economy |
The economy of a country is its trade, industry and money. |
Ecosystem |
A community of plants and animals, and the environment in which they live. Each part of the ecosystem depends on the other parts. |
Ecotourism |
Tourist resorts and facilities which are developed to have the least impact on the environment; so future generations can enjoy it. |
Exploitation |
Using resources that will be harmful to the environment or people. |
Kava |
A plant that is used to make a drink used in welcoming ceremonies. It is a mild narcotic (drug) |
Habitat |
The natural environment of a plant or animal. |
Indigenous |
People, plants, and wildlife that are native to an area. |
Kerekere |
Unconditional giving based on the concept that all property is communal. |
Lovo |
A feast of meat, taro, cassava and fish cooked in earth oven. |
Mangrove |
Trees that grow on tropical coastlines, where rivers enter the sea. They are the only trees that can grow in brackish water (a mixture of salt and river water). They have long roots above ground which help trap sediment. As more and more sediment is trapped, the ground gets drier and other plants start to grow. |
Mass Tourism |
Where many people visit the same area or resort, often resulting in problems for the environment. |
Meke |
Traditional Fijian dance that enacts local stories and legends. |
Primary commodities |
Raw materials which have not been processed, such as sugar cane, coconut and Kava. |
Range |
The difference between highest and lowest value. |
Service industry |
An industry which sells its services rather than making products. Shops, banks, hotels and transport companies are part of the service industry. |
Sustainable development |
Using resources at a low and steady rate so that there is little damage to the environment and so future generations can use them. |
Tourism |
The industry that sells holidays and leisure activities. |
Vilavilairevo |
"Jumping into the oven"; name given to 'fire walking', walking barefoot over white-hot stones. |

Hotel glossary terms meaning
Theme park: An amusement park in which the rides, attractions, shows, and buildings revolve around a central theme or group of themes.
Tour: A prearranged, prepaid journey, usually including an itinerary of leisure activities, to one or more destinations and a return to the point of origin.
Tourism: All the components of the travel industry used to serve the needs and wants of tourists and to attract travelers to a destination.
Tourist: A person who travels at least 100 miles from home to visit an area for business and/or pleasure for 24 hours or more.
Travel industry: The business segment that provides transportation, lodging, dining, attractions, entertainment, guide services, and other travel elements related to tourism.
